Introducing: The Tudor Black Bay Chrono Relaunch With Slimmer Case And New Dials

Quick Take It's safe to say that everyone saw Tudor's teaser in the run-up to Watches & Wonders this year. You know, the one with the black and red smoke. We all had our theories, but now the watch is here (and it isn't a Coke GMT). Tudor has just unveiled a relaunch of the Black Bay Chrono, in commemoration of 50 years of the brand's chronograph-making efforts. The watch comes in two configurations: black dial with white sub-dials, or white dial with black sub-dials. Each one has the signature red text as well as a red arrow on the chronograph seconds hand (a feature carried over from the two-tone Black Bay Chrono). But this is a relaunch – not just new dial colors. As such, the case has been completely redone, and made slimmer as a result. It still houses the same Tudor in-house MT5813 (designed in collaboration with Breitling) which makes the new case profile all the more impressive. Initial Thoughts Did someone say Paul Newman? This new release undoubtedly takes inspiration from the Rolex Daytonas of yore. You've got all the hallmarks of those watches on this new release, from the panda (or reverse panda) dial layout down to that one line of red text. Of course, those vintage pieces didn't feature the dive-style applied markers seen on this watch, but they also weren't 200m water resistant (this is). Similar to Rolex, Tudor rolls things out slowly. The original Black Bay Chrono was a splashy release back in 2017 . If there were complaints about that watch, they were certainly centered on the thickness (it did, after all, measure a rather tall 15.3mm in case height). Well, this relaunch solves that problem – shaving just about a full millimeter off the height of the watch. That may not seem like a lot, but it is. Of course, we look forward to seeing this watch in the metal to get a sense of just how much slimmer it wears. In many ways, the Black Bay Chrono has touched two extreme ends of the design spectrum and now lands very much in a comfortable center. The first iteration was quite conservative, with little contrast on the dial. The two-tone variant represented a much louder, bolder iteration with steel, gold, and splashes of red. The new Black Bay Chrono is a heritage play, which is Tudor's wheelhouse. It brings all of the old into a decidedly modern package – and it just looks awesome.
