Introducing: Our Very First HODINKEE-Branded Watch
All year, we've been reading the comments (yes, we do read them all!) and taking note of what the enthusiast community really wants. We hear you loud and clear. Today, we're giving you a sneak peek at a limited-edition watch with all your favorite features.
We call it the HODINKEE Professional.
It all began when Jack Forster was meandering around CERN in 2019, working on a story about particle accelerators' potential application in horology, when he discovered a stock of unused radium in a laboratory closet. After greasing a few wheels with some phone calls to powerful European investors, Jack was able to smuggle the supply of radium back to HODINKEE HQ. Upon arrival, he deposited the glowing chunk of radium, the heaviest member of the alkaline-earth metal family, onto the marble slab we typically use to photograph watches. The radium decay was a sight to behold, and it gave us a brilliant idea: Why not use the famous HODINKEE marble background as a dial, and faithfully revive the horological tradition of radium lume plots?
We wanted to give our readers the chance to "own a piece of history" with the marble dial. And we went all out with six lines of text below the hands to really convey what makes this piece special. It's history on your wrist. Wristory.
And so it was born, our first HODINKEE-branded limited-edition wristwatch.
The HODINKEE Professional is designed for an active office lifestyle. With a whopping 30m water resistance, it can stand up to the daily rigors – like washing your hands – that really put a watch to the test. Additionally, it employs our patented Safe-Lok double-action bezel-timing release switch to make sure the bezel doesn't accidentally advance when washing your hands. This watch is meant to be used as a tool, and the four dots engraved into the ceramic bezel ensure you're on schedule for "decompression stops" during a stressful day at work.
Although the movement inside is essentially the ETA 2824, we've laser-engraved our logo on the rotor, therefore allowing us to dub it the in-house ultra-hi-beat caliber DINK 001. The watch also boasts an oversized double date window at 4:30 and triple tourbillons hidden beneath a steel caseback, so you'll just have to trust us that they're in there.
As for the dial, we call this baby a "Temecula dial," paying homage to the classic horological tradition of combining Arabic and Roman numerals. The design speaks to those who see the sprawling metropolis as their playground, where a vast horizon of empty corporate skyscrapers evokes infinite possibilities.
With 21mm lug width and a case that's been downsized from 50mm to 48.5mm to suit modern tastes, the watch also features a pared-down aesthetic and fauxtina "that just works" and adds "a pop of color."
The watch will be available exclusively to HODINKEE commenters. You're gonna love it.
