This Week's Pre-Owned Picks Look A Little Different...
Today's selection of pre-owned watches was compiled in a fun and new way. Last month, in honor of Women's History Month, we asked the women of HODINKEE to volunteer and help us curate a special selection of watches for this week's drop. No, it's technically no longer Women's History Month, but at HODINKEE, we believe in celebrating women and the watches they love year-round.
Of course, this isn't a selection of only ladies' timepieces – we firmly support Cara Barrett's recent editorial that watches shouldn't be saddled with a specific gender label. Instead, within this week's pre-owned drop, you'll find a diverse selection of pieces that any watch connoisseur can appreciate and that will look great on any wrist, as highlighted by a few of the women working here at HODINKEE.
Let me be the first to say, the women of HODINKEE have great taste. In this assortment, you'll find models like a Patek Philippe World Time , a Tudor Prince Date Chronograph , and an unusual and underrated Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 , as well as my personal favorite: a solid-gold Zenith Elite Ultra Thin .
Keep reading to get a woman's take on all 10 watches that make up this week's collection .
Patek Philippe World Time Ref. 5110J-001 In 18k Yellow Gold
Saori Omura, Senior Category Manager, Vintage
Perhaps if I'd pursued my other dream as a career diplomat, this Patek Philippe World Time (aka Heures Universelles) would be a watch I'd gift myself. One of the reasons I appreciate watchmaking is because it's truly about form following function. Watches are part beautifully crafted objects and part precision instruments solving problems in our daily lives. This nifty world time design can tell what time it is at various locations in the world with just a quick glance at your wrist. As a vintage watch person, I also appreciate that this model has its roots in the first serially produced world time wristwatch by the company in 1939 (ref. 1415), credited to the Swiss watchmaker Louis Cottier. Almost 80 years later, the world time design concept remains relevant and has been adopted by many watchmakers along the way. Personally, I love the idea of time being universal, and this watch brings me excitement that something is always happening around the world.
Tudor Prince Date Chronograph Ref. 79280
Sarah Reid, Advertising Manager
I'm admittedly a one-watch woman, and I prefer that one watch be a bit oversized, decidedly unexpected, and to come with the option of a bracelet. Since joining HODINKEE five years ago, the watch I've worn has always been a Tudor. Sticking with tradition, the Tudor Prince Date Chronograph ref. 79280 certainly feels like it could be a big, bad, vintage Rolex, but when you take a closer look, you're greeted by something much softer, and, IMHO, much cooler. Made in the late '90s, the watch straddles the line of what we consider to be true vintage but certainly echoes the design of the great Daytonas of yesteryear. With a stainless steel bezel, silvered dial, and white sub-registers, there's a certain subtlety to this reference that's hard to find among other chronographs of the era. While the watch does check the box by coming on a bracelet, I'd love to see this thrown on a Reid strap from the HODINKEE Shop to give it a bit more of a vintage feel. Plus, with box and papers from France, this Tudor has a certain je ne sais quoi I just can’t resist.
Tudor Prince Day-Date Ref. 76200
Shahed Khaddash, Video Editor
The Rolex Day-Date has always appealed to me. It's never appealed to my wallet, however. So, when I saw this pre-owned Tudor Prince Day-Date, I thought, what a perfect alternative. It doesn't have the flash of gold the Rolex offers, but in its stainless steel exterior, it offers a subtleness the Rolex does not. With the days all melding into one while working from home, the reminder that this Tudor's day and date complication offers is well appreciated.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 Ref. 116000
Danis Cespedes, Customer Experience Associate
There's nothing like putting on a pair of Stan Smith sneakers, beige trousers with a matching sweater, and a clean, bold watch. Minimalist fashion has always been my style, but when it comes to my watch, I want it to stand out on its own and make a statement. This Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 116000 speaks volumes because it elevates the simplicity of a black dial with a textured center and bold, lumed Arabic numerals at three, six, and nine o'clock. But what really stands out to me is the slightly smaller Arabic minute markers that circle around the watch in multiples of five and in an ivory white hue. It just draws attention to the watch as a whole without overpowering the monochromatic, clean look. Paired with a classic stainless steel Oyster bracelet, this 36mm Rolex sport watch sits perfectly on the wrist and heightens any fashion statement you wish to make – from chic to casual.
TAG Heuer Carrera Heritage Calibre 6 With Silver Dial
Daisy Alioto, Audience Engagement Manager
Lately, I've been thinking about how to be an outdoor person after spending so much of 2020 indoors. By outdoor, I don't just mean outside physically but outside myself – part of the externalized churn of civilization without experiencing the horizontal vertigo of walking through crowds for the first time in a while. Obviously, TAG Heuer has deep ties to racing, but this Carrera Heritage Calibre 6 in stainless steel feels closer to driving 65 miles per hour down the highway on the way to a June garden party. I'm still learning the nuances of watch craftsmanship, so I gravitate toward a watch based on the mood it evokes in me. To me, this watch feels like stepping out of the library and into the sunlight.
Portugieser Chronograph Automatic Ref. IW3714-45 With Silver Dial
Erica Amagoh, Merchandising Assistant, Accessories
This IWC Portugieser Chronograph Automatic really stood out to me because of its timeless appeal. This is a piece you wouldn't have to think about when putting it on each morning. It's simple and elegant, but still a bolder choice for a dress watch with the chronograph complication. Yet, even with the added functionality, the details on the dial are really clean and give the watch a fresh look. The gold hands and hour markers paired with the stainless steel build provide a very nice contrast that would allow the watch to be styled seamlessly with most things. I tend to shy away from watches with bracelets, so I also like that this Portugieser comes with a nice leather strap.
Zenith Elite 680 Ultra Thin In 18k Rose Gold
Cait Bazemore, Editor, HODINKEE Shop
I've previously professed my ongoing love affair with my first watch, a 38mm Zenith El Primero on bracelet, and today, I'm here to gush over another model from one of my all-time favorite watchmakers: the Elite Ultra Thin. If you were going to have a two-watch collection of strictly Zenith models, the El Primero and Elite Ultra Thin would make the perfect pair, the perfect yin and yang. The Elite Ultra Thin is everything the El Primero is not in the best possible way. This elevated dress watch features a precious metal construction, a sleek build, and a rich midnight blue dial, housing one of Zenith's top-of-the-line movements: the self-winding caliber Elite 680. Top it all off with a supple leather strap, and you have, in my opinion, an utterly flawless dress watch and an ideal complement to the El Primero or any sport chronograph in your collection.
OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Chronometer Chronograph
Amanda Brown, Customer Experience Associate
Growing up on the West Coast and dividing my time evenly between the mountains and the Pacific, I considered myself equal parts land and sea. And who doesn't love surf & turf, especially when it comes in watch form, like with this Seamaster Aqua Terra whose name literally means "water earth"? Since planning ahead is not my strongest quality, I love anything that can pull double duty, and the ease of this Aqua Terra – how it can go from the beach to dinner – makes it so great. The vertical lines of the teak dial, inspired by a boat deck, add some fun visual interest that makes me smile every time I look at it. The whole design, with a no-fuss stainless steel case, a polished bezel, three easy-to-read chronograph sub-dials, and a handy date window at 4:30 makes for a clear and legible experience that helps you feel put together no matter where life leads you. Take a closer look right here .
Cartier Pasha Seatimer Black Dial In Stainless Steel
Kaitlin Koch, Marketing Associate
For Cartier, jewelry and watch design go hand and hand, and as such, many Cartier watches, including the Pasha Seatimer, revive a design language that is both beautiful and novel. The original Pasha Seatimer was supposedly created by Louis Cartier for the Pasha of Marrakesh in the 1930s, when he requested a watch that was able to endure his daily swims but was also dressy enough for his many royal engagements. The result, and the following iterations, embody this unique duality. I love that this watch doesn't shy away from its interesting origin with its illustrative, Art Deco type or – my favorite detail – the retaining chain on the cabochon-topped screw-down crown. Yet, it doesn't try to appear old with faux-patina, and it can now be found in stainless steel versus its original solid gold. The likelihood of me swimming daily laps is about as close to my chances of attending a royal gathering. However, I'm a frequenter of Coney Island and have worked numerous luxury events, so I like to think this Seatimer , fit for a Pasha, would also be a great watch for my far-from-Morocco life.
Cartier Tank Francaise Quartz In Two Tone
Bryanna Anglin, Customer Experience Associate
Of all the features of the Cartier Tank Francaise, the Roman numeral hour markers are my favorite. Roman numerals are one of the most classic designs found on clocks and watches – this style feels so timeless (pun intended) and instantly transports me to the 1920s. Cartier initially designed the Tank in 1917, and although the Tank Francaise was introduced several decades later in 1996, it holds many of the same characteristics of the original, which I think is pretty cool. Another thing I love about this particular Tank Francaise is its pink mother-of-pearl dial and the 18k rose-gold crown; both are simply stunning!
