Watching Movies: Robert Redford Dons A Doxa In A '70s Spy Thriller
Three Days of the Condor (1975) is a wonderfully entertaining example of a '70s thriller directed by Sydney Pollack. Robert Redford plays a paper-pushing CIA employee caught up in a messy situation: What happens when you come back from lunch to find your entire office wiped out by a group of assassins, and you're the next target?

Why We're Watching
Last week, Doxa released its entire collection of dive watches in carbon – a case material first unveiled late last year. As of today, all its classic colorful divers are available in this very black, ultra-modern material (though their soul remains undeniably retro).

No tool watch better exemplifies the shag-carpeted, orange-and-brown 1970s than Doxa – and no actor more so than Redford, in his shaggy golden-boy prime.

Throughout the decade, you'd likely find Redford wearing his signature Red Submariner (a watch he wore on-screen several times). In Condor , however, he wore what was rumored to be another of his personal watches: A Doxa Sharkhunter, on a thick black bund strap. This is definitely a left-of-center choice, but a perfect one.
This watch choice speaks to Redford's fearless style. A bund strap is not an obvious pairing for a dive watch, so it feels extra intentional. And he supplements it with a fully shagadelic wardrobe: Aviator eyeglasses, a wide-collared shirt, a tweed blazer, a pea coat, and hiking boots. Fun fact: Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood pays homage to the Redford aesthetic from this film (and others), giving Brad Pitt's character a similar hairstyle and a chunky tool watch fitted to a bund strap.
When We’re Watching
The Sharkhunter is most visible in two key scenes.
Just after the opening credits (with a pitch-perfect, era-appropriate musical score), we see Redford's character – a CIA book digitizer – working at his desk, prior to the office massacre. At around the 4:55 mark, you can clearly see the burly hunk of steel and black bund refusing to fit under any shirt or sweater sleeve.

The watch also appears in a steamier moment when Redford and his love interest, Faye Dunaway, retreat to her apartment. As they're making out in her bedroom (1:07:31), the camera pans down to both characters' hands, giving the watch its only true close-up. The scene that follows shows Redford at a kitchen counter, his sleeves rolled up and the Doxa in full view.
Three Days of the Condor holds up surprisingly well – and so does the watch. The film features great performances by Redford, Dunaway, and the late Max von Sydow. Come for the Doxa, stay for everything else.
Three Days of the Condor is available to rent on Amazon and iTunes. The Doxa Sharkhunter is available here . And a big thanks to the Minnesota Redford himself, Jason Heaton, for the lead image.Fire up the popcorn. Here's your watch-related film of the week.
