Introducing: The Timex x NN07 M79 Limited Edition

Quick Take Copenhagen-based menswear line NN07 has a cosmopolitan approach to clothing design and branding. The idea is to unify people across cultures. Though the brand name looks like something you'd find on the periodic table of elements, NN actually stands for "no nationality." Having said all that, the designs are distinctly Scandinavian. And now NN07 is partnering with Timex on a sleek limited edition of the American watchmaker's M79 automatic watch, which itself takes inspiration from Timex's other runaway hit, the quartz Q Timex reissue. Each evokes the angular tonneau shapes and elaborate, geometrical bracelets of 1970s watch design. And both the M79 and the Q Timex deliver quality design at a populist price. Back when Cole wrote about the first Q reissue, enthusiasts downright loved it. Initial Thoughts Whereas the first M79 played off the blue and black bezel of Rolex's popular Batman , this limited edition delivers a rotating bezel in dark, greyish blue. The dial is decorated with luminous fauxtina markers, which in the lower portion are slightly irregular, in keeping with the zero of the NN07 logo. Reinforcing this subtle visual cue is one in the seven o'clock position that's been turned blue. There's a slightly unsettling beauty to that imperfection. It's as if the fully formed applied marker has been drawn by hand. The dial is otherwise conventional, with a Timex "T" hour hand (echoing a classic Mercedes hand), plus a display for the day and the date. Please note that the water resistance of M79 is only 50 meters, so a dive watch this is not. I've not worn a Time M79, but as an owner and frequent wearer of the Q Timex I can vouch for the basic case shape (the M79 is a bit larger than the Q) and the bracelet you see here. The bracelet's clasp opens fully and takes a little bit of getting used to, but once it's a part of your watch wearing rotation, it is immensely gratifying to put on in the morning, especially if you've taken the time to size the wrist-gripping bracelet just right. I'll be honest, NN07 is not a line I'd heard of before discovering this attractive Timex M79 limited edition. But learning more about the label through the watch, and perusing shirts and trousers from the current collection, I think I get it. NN07 is about simple pieces with the design integrity to become future classics. With both their apparel and this watch, the canvas is blank enough that you can interpret it as you see fit.
