Introducing: The TAG Heuer Carrera Green Special Edition

I won't go so far as to say that I do not like green watches. That wouldn't be true. I would surely wear them in a house, though I'd think twice before wearing them with a mouse. I will say that the current green-watch trend is out of control, as documented by Cole in a great piece during Watches and Wonders . But at this point, what's one more? Taken on its own merits, the watch you see here is perfectly lovely. And it deserves to rise out of the pack. This morning, TAG Heuer released the new Carrera Green Special Edition. It's a vintage-inspired, limited edition teal timepiece paying homage to the brand's chronograph-making heritage. This comes just one month after TAG released a different green watch: The Monaco Green Dial in celebration of the Gran Prix De Monaco Historique. You might recognize the case design here because its one we've seen the brand use a lot with its Heuer Carrera vintage-inspired pieces. The HODINKEE Skipper LE (which sold at Phillips overt the weekend ) used this same case. It is 39mm in diameter with polished surfaces, a thin bezel, and 100m of water resistance. The watch pays direct homage to the vintage Heuer reference 2447, sharing most of its styling including a domed sapphire crystal. Adding to the vintage effect is the use of faux patina on the lume plots and the hands. The lume plots are applied above each of the similarly retro-evocative polished hour markers. Interestingly, though there is no vintage green Heuer Carrera, the teal hue feels very mid-century. It looks like the kind of watch you might find packed away in a box collecting dust in the basement – as if the original emerald green faded to a shade cooler than the original. All of which is to say that, despite being the latest entrant into the green watch fray, this particular watch feels more intentional – more thoughtful. There's no shortage of history and heritage in the Heuer Carrera line, and the Green Special Edition is able to blend it with modern watchmaking and finishing. Inside the watch beats the TAG Heuer Calibre Heuer 02 Automatic manufacture movement visible through an exhibition caseback. This is a column-wheel, vertical-clutch chronograph with 80 hours of power reserve. The rotor is blacked out on the back with teal text matching the dial aesthetic. The new TAG Heuer Carrera Green Special Edition is limited to 500 pieces and comes fitted to an alligator strap – though the strap, unlike the typical gray-green gator, is black.
